Researcher Explores Sustainable Ties Among the Poor
Through her extensive research, Joan Mazelis, an assistant professor of sociology at Rutgers University–Camden, has discovered further evidence of non-kin social ties among the poor with greater longevity than disposable ties. Focusing on the Kensington Welfare Rights Union in Philadelphia, she found that these bonds are based on a mutual understanding of support, often take on familial roles, and function according to set norms of reciprocity.
