Announcing Rescheduled Commencement Ceremonies for the Class of 2020

Sent Friday, May 1, 2020

To the Campus Community:

The members of the Rutgers–Camden Commencement Committee join the entire Rutgers University–Camden community in offering our admiration of the resilience of the Class of 2020 and our sincere congratulations on their upcoming graduation.

In the wake of the disappointing announcement of the necessary postponement of May commencement ceremonies and related festivities, we have heard the concerns of our graduates and their families and developed a plan to properly celebrate and honor our deserving members of the Class of 2020.

We have solicited feedback from students with surveys and a series of virtual listening sessions during the past few weeks. A clear and passionate message has emerged: our students want to celebrate their hard-earned achievements in the company of their classmates, their faculty and, above all, their families.

To that end, we will celebrate the Class of 2020 in a two-step approach that includes both virtual commemorations later this month and rescheduled in-person ceremonies that will take place in the Walter K. Gordon Theater on our campus throughout the first week of December 2020. Those ceremonies will individually recognize and celebrate each student by name as she or he walks across the stage. Each graduating student will receive tickets for guests. A complete schedule and other commencement details will be available online by Wednesday, May 5.

While no virtual celebration can replicate the vibrancy of a traditional in-person ceremony, all Rutgers University–Camden schools have planned online celebrations this May to mark the end of an unprecedented semester.

Rutgers Law School and the School of Nursing will hold virtual ceremonies that will have many elements of a traditional commencement convocation. The Law ceremony is planned for Thursday, May 28, and Nursing for Friday, May 29. Students will be receiving from their respective schools information about how they can participate in these ceremonies beginning Monday, May 4.

The School of Business, the College of Arts and Sciences and University College, and The Graduate School will premiere special commencement videos on Friday, May 29, that will offer students and their families the opportunity to enjoy the content on their own schedules.

Leading up to the dates of the originally scheduled ceremonies, graduates will have the opportunity to participate in social media campaigns and to provide content for these celebratory videos. All graduating students are invited to submit photos that capture their experiences as Scarlet Raptors at

Any academic questions related to graduation should be directed to each student’s individual academic advisors. General questions about commencement can be sent to

To our graduating students and their families, I offer my best wishes for great success in finishing out this remarkable semester.
