Advancing our Culture of Inclusion

To the Campus Community:

As The State University of New Jersey, Rutgers reflects the rich diversity of our state and our nation. At Rutgers University–Camden, we embrace, and derive strength from, our roots as a place of access for first-generation students. Our continued enrollment growth, particularly at the undergraduate level, is amplifying that heritage of access.

Diversity of experience and thought among our faculty, staff, and students energizes the intellectual and social climate of our campus and provides exciting opportunities for us to learn from one another. I am pleased to announce that Dr. Nyeema Watson, our associate chancellor for civic engagement, has accepted a special assignment to lead our campus in the development of a strategy to promote diversity, inclusion, and equity at Rutgers University–Camden. She will launch a working group that will be constituted by a robust representation of members of every aspect of our campus community.

This initiative will complement the good work already done by the faculty-driven Committee on Institutional Equity and Diversity (CIED) and the Diversity and Inclusion Council led by Mary Beth Daisey (vice chancellor, student affairs).

Last week, I participated in an invitational gathering of university leaders from across the nation to examine these very issues. Hosted by the University of Pennsylvania, this summit underscored that Rutgers University–Camden is among those forward-thinking universities seeking to rigorously support an inclusive campus environment.

Please join me in thanking Nyeema for accepting this assignment in addition to her ongoing responsibilities as the leader of our civic engagement programs. If you would like to participate in this important working group, please contact her at

Our supportive campus spirit invigorates me every day. I thank you for all that you do on behalf of Rutgers University–Camden.

Phoebe A. Haddon, J.D., LL.M.
