Krista Wells was always interested in a career in business, but it took a little while for her to realize that accounting is her passion.

Her mother, aunt, and a cousin are all accountants, but when she arrived at Rutgers University–Camden in the fall of 2013, she wasn’t sure of a major, and after one year, she decided to transfer to Camden County College.

By the time she chose to return to the Rutgers School of Business–Camden as a junior in 2016, she decided she would major in accounting.

On campus, she served as a student accounting assistant for the Division of Student Affairs business office, handling all student organizations’ banking accounts. The job has provided accounting experience that will be useful when she becomes an accounting professional.

An internship at Deloitte in the fall of 2016 gave Wells an opportunity to work as part of a team auditing a public company. She worked on the company’s year-end audit and assisted in publishing its federally required 10-K financial statements detailing the company’s business and financial condition.

“This internship gave me the opportunity to exercise what I had learned in the classroom and understand it better,” says Wells, of Chews Landing. “I found that auditing was something I was extremely good at and I genuinely enjoyed the work.”

Wells’ second passion is community service. Through her participation in public-service projects in engaged civic learning courses and the Sigma Delta Tau sorority, she has learned valuable lessons outside of the classroom.

In her sorority, she participated in fundraising events, including the Sister-to-Sister scholarship fund that raises money to help a sorority sister cover tuition costs, and the Dancing with the Staff dance competition, which helped raise funds for Prevent Child Abuse America.

“Civic engagement not only betters the community,” says Wells, “it brings people together and can open up one’s eyes to a new perspective about some of the growing concerns in the world around us.”

To help guide fellow Rutgers–Camden students interested in accounting, Wells was a guest speaker at Career Center seminars for accounting majors, sharing her internship experiences and answering questions.

After Wells graduates on May 17, she will begin preparing for her CPA exam, while continuing her job as a student accounting assistant.

In September, she will begin working at Deloitte as an external auditor.
