Renewing Our Commitment to Unity

Sent Friday, March 30, 2018

To the Campus Community:

You may have heard about or actually seen images being circulated online of a flyer that invites others to engage in harassment and violence against Muslims on April 3. The Rutgers University Police Department was today asked to perform a threat assessment and intelligence officials have determined that the image is derived from a photo of a printed flyer that a hate group in the United Kingdom mailed to some members of Parliament and to members of the Muslim community in 2016-17. Despite the lapse in time since this circulation came about, the RUPD is joining law enforcement at all levels – locally, regionally, and nationally – in heightened vigilance.

While there is no specific threat to members of our Rutgers University family, this is a time for us to reaffirm that we will not allow hate to divide this community. Especially as major religious holidays are being celebrated at this time by other religions, we can take this opportunity to resolve not to be impeded as we work across boundaries of all kinds to grow together, leveraging our talents, skills, and intellect to make a better world for ourselves and for the next generation.

We wish for all members of our community continued peace and unity.
