Middle States Evaluation Team Visiting Rutgers University-Camden This Week

Sent Monday, March 19, 2018

To the Campus Community:

Welcome back from Spring Break! For everyone who had the opportunity to take a short pause in the semester, I hope it was rejuvenating.

As we start the second half of the spring semester, I would like to remind everyone that, as President Barchi announced in a recent email (see below), the University’s accreditation review by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education is taking place, beginning today. The Evaluation Team will be at Rutgers from today through Thursday. It will be visiting Rutgers University–Camden on Wednesday, March 21.

If you do have the opportunity to interact with members of the team during their visit, I hope you will welcome them and speak with them about your experiences at the University.

You can learn more about our accreditation review at https://middlestates.rutgers.edu or by contacting middlestates2018@rutgers.edu.

Subject: Please Welcome Middle States Visitors to Rutgers Right After Spring Break

Dear Rutgers Students, Faculty, and Staff:

As we continue to dig out from yesterday’s storm and prepare for Spring Break, I want you to be aware that as soon as the break ends, Rutgers will host visitors on all campuses for an important review of the University.

As you may know, every ten years Rutgers University undergoes an accreditation review by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). Accreditation is a form of consumer protection, assuring the public and governmental agencies that Rutgers meets certain standards of quality and operates within a culture of continuous assessment and improvement. Just as important, Rutgers must be accredited in order for our students to receive federal financial aid and benefit from other federal funding programs.

We have already taken the first major step in our accreditation review by preparing a written Self-Study Report with the input of more than 100 students, faculty, administrators, and governing board members. This self-study, after review and revision by members of the Rutgers community over the past year, was recently endorsed by the Board of Governors and submitted to the MSCHE.

In the next step of the process, a nine-member peer review team, using the Self-Study Report as the basis for its review, will be visiting the entire University from Monday, March 19 through Thursday, March 22. The team will provide us with its initial report prior to leaving Rutgers.

During their tours of all of our campuses you may have an impromptu interaction with a Middle States team member. If so, we hope you will provide a warm Rutgers welcome and candid feedback on your experiences as a member of the Rutgers community.

The final accreditation decision will come from MSCHE after the Commission’s formal review and vote at the end of June. While we fully expect to be accredited, the Commission has the options to require additional information; postpone their decision; give the University a warning; put us on probation; or ask us to show cause why accreditation should not be withdrawn. I will be notifying the entire Rutgers community of the Commission’s decision once we receive it.

With thanks to all those at Rutgers who worked hard to clear the snow and keep the University safe and operating yesterday, I wish you the best for Spring Break, and please be aware of the Middle States visit during the week classes resume. For information on the accreditation process and to read the Self-Study Report, please visit https://middlestates.rutgers.edu. If you have questions, please contact middlestates2018@rutgers.edu.

Sincerely,

Robert Barchi
