Launching the Search for the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences

Sent Monday, Feb. 19, 2018

To the Campus Community:

In my recent email to the campus community, I reported that we would be undertaking a national search for a new dean for the Rutgers Faculty of Arts and Sciences–Camden.

This leader should be a highly qualified academic dean who shares the vision and values of Rutgers–Camden, someone who is committed to a multidisciplinary approach to liberal arts education and research, and who is dedicated to our students’ well-being. The successful candidate should have a clear understanding of the role of a research university in promoting the advancement of Camden and our state; the complexities of developing and growing successful programs that cultivate creative thinking for students at the undergraduate through Ph.D. levels; and a commitment to diversity and inclusion. We seek someone who will ensure that the Rutgers Faculty of Arts and Sciences–Camden thrives and elevates our world-class Rutgers reputation.

A search committee composed of committed faculty, students, administrators, and alumni will launch a national search for this important position. They will assemble a pool of candidates who reflect the valued diversity of our state and our university.

Committee members listed are from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences unless otherwise indicated. The membership is:

  • Dr. Michael Palis, provost (co-chair)
  • Dr. Jane Siegel, professor of criminal justice (co-chair)
  • Dr. Sarah Allred, associate professor of psychology and faculty director, Senator Water Rand Institute for Public Affairs
  • Dr. Grace Brannigan, associate professor of physics
  • Prof. Allan Espiritu, associate professor of art
  • Wanda Garcia, associate director, Community Leadership Center
  • Dr. Keith Green, associate professor of English
  • Tooba Hussain, undergraduate student
  • Dr. Paul Jargowsky, professor of public policy and director, Center for Urban Research and Education
  • Dr. Walter MacDonald ‘74, president and CEO, Educational Testing Service
  • Rosemarie Pena, graduate student
  • Dr. Benedetto Piccoli, Joseph and Loretta Lopez Chair in Mathematics and associate provost for research
  • Dr. Lorrin Thomas, associate professor of history
  • Dr. Nyeema Watson, associate chancellor, civic engagement

Please join me in thanking the members of the search committee for their dedication to this important search and for their commitment to advancing our campus. They will work with the highly regarded Korn Ferry firm to identify strong candidates for this role. I strongly encourage you to share your thoughts with me and with them on the future of the Rutgers Faculty of Arts and Sciences–Camden — now and as the committee’s deliberations progress — by contacting Provost Mike Palis at

Phoebe A. Haddon, J.D., LL.M.
